CNBC: Texas Is No. 1 for Business

The Lone Star State is alone at the top again.
 
For the second time in three years, Texas edged out Virginia for the No. 1 spot in CNBC's exclusive study America's Top States for Business.
 
This time, the score wasn't as close as it was in 2008; Texas managed a total score of 1508, out of a possible 2439, vs. Virginia's 1477.
 
Texas moved up in three of the ten categories, while finishing first in two of them, including an impressive 270 out of 314 possible points in the Economy one.
 
The state also captured the No. 1 spot in Transportation & Infrastructure.
 
Texas made the top ten in three other categories: Technology & Innovation (4), Access to Capital (7) and Cost of Living (8). The five top-ten showings matched last year's total.
 
Education (30) and Cost of Doing Business (30) remained weak spots.
 
Texas' total score was 30 more than a year ago, when it finished second to Virginia. The state also took the No. 2 spot in 2007.

Happy Independence Day! Today we celebrate the birth of our nation, the wisdom and courage of our Founding Fathers, and the blessings of liberty that we enjoy as Americans. For over 234 years the United States of America has been a shining symbol of freedom and a beacon of hope to the world.

I want to extend my special thanks our brave men and women in uniform who are defending our freedom today. I wish them and all 25 million Texans a very safe and happy 4th of July.

Texas Risk Mitigation Forum

Lt. Governor David Dewhurst addressed the Texas Risk Mitigation Forum Tuesday and urged all Texans to make preparations for the 2010 Atlantic hurricane season which began June 1. The season's first major named storm, Tropical Storm Alex, is projected to become a hurricane and potentially impact communities in coastal and south Texas. Heavy rains, high winds and possible flooding could result along the Texas coast and inland.

"First and foremost, all Texans in Alex's projected path should listen closely to their local leaders and heed any warnings. Waiting until the storm hits is too late," said Lt. Governor Dewhurst. "State emergency management officials are watching the situation closely and are already making preparations for possible landfall, including pre-positioning rescue crews and supplies, as well as activating Texas Military Forces, for relief and recovery operations. But the more people prepare now, the less likely they will be in harm's way later."

Critical Fundraising Deadline

We’re closing in fast on a critical semiannual fundraising deadline.  Wednesday, June 30, is the final day to accept contributions before we file our semiannual report with the Texas Ethics Commission.  This is our chance to show the breadth and depth of our support across the state of Texas.  

Texas Democrats have launched their own fundraising offensive to bolster support for their slate of liberal candidates.  But, we’ve all seen what they mean by “change.”  Out-of-control spending, skyrocketing debt and unrestrained growth of the federal government.   We simply cannot afford to let the same failed liberal policies we’ve seen grow out of Washington take root here in Texas. The 2010 Republican Party of Texas State Convention was a tremendous success!  It was great to see so many Republicans, conservatives and Tea Party activists united and working together for victory in November.
