Mar 31, 2010

Today, Texas Lt. Governor David Dewhurst made the following statement regarding Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison's announcement that she will fill out the remainder of her term in the United States Senate:

"As I've said in the past, I'm supportive of Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison doing whatever she believes is in her best interest and that of her family.

"I'm running for re-election as Lt. Governor, as I announced in early September 2009, focusing on balancing the budget, helping Texans back to work, securing the border, fighting for affordable health care and improving education.

"It's an honor to serve as Lt. Governor. In the future, I will continue to do what is best for Texas."

Statement on the Cancellation of the Controversial Play at Tarleton State University

Mar 27, 2010

David today issued the following statement supporting cancellation of the play, Corpus Christi, at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas, on the day before Palm Sunday:

"The cancellation of the play, Corpus Christi, by the university was the right thing to do. While I'm a strong defender of free speech, we must also protect the rights and reasonable expectations of Texas taxpayers and how their money is used. A play that is completely contrary to the standards of decency and moral beliefs of the vast majority of Texans should not be performed using any state resources, especially by an institution of higher learning. "

Statement Condemning Controversial Performance of Play at Tarleton State University

Mar 26, 2010

David released the following statement today condemning the performance of the controversial play Corpus Christi at Tarleton State University, in Stephenville, Texas, the day before Palm Sunday:

"Every citizen is entitled to the freedom of speech, but no one should have the right to use government funds or institutions to portray acts that are morally reprehensible to the vast majority of Americans."

"Texans don't deserve to see their hard-earned tax money used to debase their religion. This lewd display runs completely contrary to the standards of scholastic excellence and common decency that we demand in our publicly-funded institutions for higher learning."

Statement on Passage of Federal Health Care Legislation

Mar 21, 2010

David released the following statement on passage of federal health care legislation:

"Today's action by Congress is a slap in the face to the clear majority of Texans, and Americans, who demand real health care reform resulting from an open and transparent process and that truly fixes a broken system. Instead, this federal plan costs Texas taxpayers $2.4 billion per year and could force the state to redirect spending away from priority items such as education, public safety and road construction, just to cover the unfunded, unaffordable mandates in this bill. I will continue to fight for affordable, accessible health care that does not increase costs or taxes on hard working Texas families and truly improves the quality of care."
